Overview
Bryconaethiops boulengeri is a substantial African schooling characin reaching about 25 cm. Generally peaceful, it still presents a risk to companions small enough to become food. Broad swimming space, water movement, and oxygen supply are central requirements.
Distribution & habitat
It occurs in the Congo basin of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, and Zambia, as well as Lake Tanganyika. Rivers and lakes form its natural setting.
Aquarium setup
Consider at least approximately 120 × 45 × 45 cm. Decoration is secondary to space: sand, wood branches, and smooth stones can provide a simple layout while leaving most of the aquarium open.
Provide effective circulation and good oxygenation. A peaceful temperament does not reduce the physical demands of an active, relatively large fish.
Diet & feeding
This omnivore accepts a mixture of live, frozen, and dry foods. Shrimp portions and live earthworms are particularly attractive. A food menu should not be treated as evidence that ornamental invertebrate companions are safe.
Behaviour & compatibility
Choose similarly sized peaceful characins, robust cichlids, and suitable bottom fishes that cannot be swallowed. Maintain a group where sufficient room is available, planning for collective adult needs.
Notes
Reliable sexing characters and ordinary aquarium breeding records are lacking. Ornamental imports are infrequent, although food-fish production takes place in its native countries.
