Overview
Brochis virginiae is a mild-tempered, social armored catfish that has appeared under several older aquarium labels, including C004. Its basic needs are straightforward: company of its own kind, clean substrate, secure cover, and food provided specifically for the group.
Distribution & habitat
The species is considered restricted to the Ucayali drainage in Peru.
Aquarium setup
Choose fine sand where possible. Rounded gravel is another option if it is maintained in thoroughly clean condition. The arrangement of other decorations is flexible, provided fish can retreat into sheltered areas when they need security.
Diet & feeding
Offer an omnivorous menu based on sinking prepared foods, with small live or frozen items such as bloodworms and aquatic worms for variety. Do not leave the group dependent on food missed by other inhabitants. Foraging fish neither remove the need for substrate cleaning nor thrive automatically on scraps.
Behaviour & compatibility
This peaceful species should have at least four to six companions of its own kind rather than being kept alone.
Sexual dimorphism
Females develop a broader, more rounded outline, especially when carrying eggs.
Notes
Historical trade names and earlier misidentifications can complicate purchases; an old label is not sufficient confirmation of identity. Occasional rises to swallow air reflect the oxygen-absorbing function of its modified intestine. Handle the fish carefully because rigid pectoral spines can puncture skin. Secretions around the spine bases have been suggested to have mild toxic properties, but this remains uncertain.
