概述
Brochis spectabilis

Overview
A peaceful armored catfish of Brazil's Guaporé basin, Brochis spectabilis combines body spotting with a sharply bounded caudal-peduncle mark. Clean sand, shelter, oxygenated water, and a conspecific group form the practical basis of its care.
Distribution & habitat
It occurs in the Brazilian Guaporé drainage. Precise habitat details are unconfirmed. Clear, plant-rich water has been proposed from the region of the type collection, but this is an inference rather than a documented collecting-site description.
Aquarium setup
Use fine sand with smooth stones and pieces of wood for shelter. Include dense planting and some floating cover. Moderate surface disturbance and movement help maintain the oxygen-rich conditions it prefers.
Avoid undergravel filtration and keep the bottom very clean. Dirty or poorly maintained substrates can damage the barbels and eventually cause their loss.
Diet & feeding
It accepts a range of sinking prepared foods. Add small live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms to provide variety and support good condition.
Behaviour & compatibility
Suitable companions include compatible small characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, dwarf cichlids, and peaceful catfishes. Very large or aggressive fishes are inappropriate. A group of at least six generally becomes more confident and active.
Sexual dimorphism
Viewing from above is useful: mature females have a rounder, broader outline, particularly when carrying eggs.
Breeding
No confirmed captive account is available for this species. Procedures for related catfishes offer an experimental approach. Set up a separate aquarium with bare flooring or fine sand or gravel, moss or other vegetation, and air-powered filtration that protects fry. Around 24 °C and slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions can be tried, with approximately two males per female conditioned on varied foods.
In relatives, gravid females are often stimulated with a 50–70% change using slightly cooler water within the appropriate range, together with increased aeration and flow. This can be repeated daily. Seasonal rhythms, delayed maturity, and species-specific responses may explain unsuccessful attempts.
Typical related-catfish spawning involves pursuit, a T-shaped pairing, and a female holding one or several eggs between her pelvic fins before attaching them to glass or another surface. Explanations of the exact fertilization route remain partly speculative. Separate eggs and adults afterward to prevent predation.
Incubation uses the same water with good oxygenation. Remove fungused eggs promptly; some breeders also use a little methylene blue. Relatives commonly hatch after three to four days and take microworms or brine-shrimp nauplii once their yolk is absorbed. Thin sand may reduce fry ailments compared with bare flooring, but this has not been established as a guaranteed method for this species.
Notes
The millennium common name refers to the journal's January 2000 date, despite the description having appeared in late 1999.
Similar species differ in body shape, snout length, and the definition of the caudal mark. Body spotting and the clearly bounded rear blotch should be assessed together, rather than relying on one dark patch or conflicting published size comparisons.
