Overview
Reaching about 7 cm, Brochis ornata is a peaceful armored catfish that gains confidence from conspecific company. Clean fine sand, shelter, and ample oxygen are important, as is choosing companions suited to its somewhat cooler conditions.
Distribution & habitat
It is native to the lower Tapajós drainage in Brazil.
Aquarium setup
A tank around 60 by 38 by 30 cm can use fine sand, smooth stones, wood, dense planting, and floating cover. Maintain surface movement and flow for oxygenation. Avoid undergravel filtration and keep the substrate clean to protect the barbels.
Diet & feeding
Offer sinking prepared foods with varied small live or frozen supplements, such as brine shrimp and chopped earthworms.
Behaviour & compatibility
Maintain at least six. A group is usually more confident and active than isolated fish. Avoid large or aggressive companions and choose peaceful species with compatible temperature needs.
Sexual dimorphism
A view from above shows the fuller, broader shape of females, particularly when carrying eggs.
Breeding
A related-cory method can be attempted with two males per female, sponge filtration, and fine plants around 24 °C and pH 7. Once females are gravid, try a 50–70% cooler-water change with increased aeration. If eggs are attached to glass or other surfaces, separate them from adults and incubate in well-oxygenated breeding-tank water, removing fungal eggs. Related-species reference points include hatching after three to four days and small live foods after yolk absorption, with a thin sand bed for rearing. These are trial procedures rather than confirmed timings for this species.
