English
Overview
A longer pointed snout helps distinguish Brochis leopardus from similarly patterned short-snouted cory catfishes. This peaceful western-Amazon species benefits from a substantial group and companions comfortable within its relatively cool temperature range.
Distribution & habitat
Records cover western-Amazon localities in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Brazil, including the Javari, Juruá, Napo, and Manuripi systems. Habitats include oxbows, lagoons, backwaters, floodplain lakes, and forest streams. The type specimens were aquarium imports, leaving their original locality uncertain. Some coastal Pará and Colombian records remain unconfirmed.
Aquarium setup
A tank around 60 by 38 by 30 cm is suggested for a group. Use fine sand with smooth rocks, wood, dense planting, and some floating shade. Maintain oxygenation and surface movement, keep the substrate clean, and avoid undergravel filtration to protect the barbels.
Diet & feeding
This omnivore forages along the substrate. Offer small sinking pellets or tablets with live or frozen supplements, ensuring adequate food reaches the group.
Behaviour & compatibility
Ten or more is an ideal group, encouraging confidence and activity. Choose peaceful companions of appropriate size rather than large or aggressive fishes, and match their temperature needs to the species’ upper limit of about 25 °C.
Sexual dimorphism
Females are larger and rounder, best compared from above. Mature males tend to develop more pointed fin tips.
Breeding
A related-cory protocol may be tried rather than assumed proven for this species. Condition a group with about two males per female, then use a substantial slightly cooler-water change when females are gravid. If eggs are attached to glass or leaves, separate them from adults and incubate in water from the spawning tank, removing fungal eggs. Feed small live foods after yolk absorption and consider a thin sand layer for rearing. The detailed sperm-transfer mechanism demonstrated in another cory species should not be treated as established here.
Notes
Compared with Hoplisoma julii and H. trilineatum, it has a longer snout and larger adult size. Occasional surface gulps are normal, while an unusual increase can signal declining water quality. Pectoral spines can catch in netting or puncture skin.
