概述
Brochis imitator

Overview
Brochis imitator is a blackwater armored catfish from the upper Negro basin. Several local relatives share its oblique dark dorsal band, so pattern alone can mislead. Alongside peaceful group housing, very soft, acidic conditions deserve particular attention for wild specimens.
Distribution & habitat
The species is endemic to the upper Negro drainage in northern Brazil and southern Venezuela, in their respective Amazonas states. Its type locality is thought to refer to forest streams north of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, rather than being precisely established.
Pristine blackwater tributaries and flooded forest provide tea-stained water with little hardness or conductivity. Wild fish may fare best toward the middle or lower end of the listed pH range.
Aquarium setup
Use fine sand, or exceptionally clean rounded gravel. Branching driftwood and dried leaves suit a blackwater arrangement and help provide the sheltered spaces the group needs.
Diet & feeding
The broader group historically called Corydoras consists largely of foraging omnivores. A captive ration can combine sinking prepared foods with small live or frozen bloodworms and aquatic worms.
Provide varied meals specifically for the catfish. Scraps from tankmates are no substitute, and maintaining these fish does not remove the need to clean the aquarium.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful and gregarious, it should have at least four to six conspecifics for company.
Sexual dimorphism
Females generally become larger, broader, and deeper-bodied than males, particularly when carrying eggs.
Breeding
Methods used with related catfishes can be employed, preferably with at least two males per female. When females are visibly gravid, replace approximately 50–70% of the water with slightly cooler water within the suitable range and increase aeration and movement. Repeat daily if needed until spawning occurs.
Eggs may adhere to glass, fine vegetation, or submerged mops, the last making collection easier. Separate eggs and adults afterward. Glass-bound eggs can be gently rolled free; incubate them in the same water with good oxygenation. Some breeders add a little methylene blue or one or two alder cones to discourage fungus.
Hatching usually follows in three to four days. Once the yolk is gone, fry take microworms and Artemia nauplii. Excellent water quality is essential, and a thin sand layer appears to reduce health problems compared with a bare container, without guaranteeing success.
Notes
Similar dorsal bands occur among several Negro armored catfishes. Shared patterns may provide protection in mixed groups, while differences in snout length or mouth position may allow different feeding niches; these remain explanatory hypotheses.
Formerly assigned to Corydoras, the species moved to Brochis in 2024. Related armored catfishes use a specialized intestine for supplementary air breathing, explaining occasional surface gulps. Their rigid pectoral spines can puncture skin, and secretions around the spine bases are suspected of mild toxicity, so careful handling is appropriate.
