Brochis gomezi

Overview

A western Amazon armored catfish, Brochis gomezi resembles several other spotted species. Adults are peaceful and social, while raising their offspring demands particularly clean conditions. Easy compatibility does not mean that fry are equally forgiving.

Distribution & habitat

Confirmed records place it in the western Amazon's Brazil–Colombia–Peru border region. Collections are sparse, leaving the full range unresolved. Lakes on Mocagua Island near Leticia, Colombia, form the type locality.

Aquarium setup

Choose fine sand, or use smooth gravel only with careful cleaning. Furnishings can otherwise follow personal preference, provided the group has sheltered resting places.

Diet & feeding

The related catfishes traditionally called Corydoras are foraging omnivores. A varied captive ration commonly combines sinking prepared foods with small live or frozen bloodworms and aquatic worms.

Feed these catfish deliberately and regularly. Leftovers from other occupants are unreliable, and the fish do not replace aquarium maintenance.

Behaviour & compatibility

Peaceful social behavior makes a group of at least four to six appropriate.

Sexual dimorphism

Females tend to grow larger, becoming conspicuously broader and deeper-bodied at maturity.

Breeding

Methods used for other related catfishes can be applied. Use at least two males per female where possible. Once females are visibly carrying eggs, replace about 50–70% of the water with slightly cooler water within the suitable range and increase aeration and movement. This stimulus may be repeated daily until spawning.

Eggs can adhere to glass, fine plants, or submerged spawning mops. Mops simplify removal; eggs on glass can be gently rolled free with a finger. Separate eggs from adults after spawning and use the same water in a well-aerated incubation container. Some breeders use a little methylene blue or one or two alder cones against fungus, alongside excellent cleanliness.

Hatching normally takes three to four days. After the yolk is absorbed, fry accept microworms and Artemia nauplii. Rearing is demanding, particularly with respect to water quality. A thin sand layer appears to produce fewer health problems than a completely bare container, although this remains an observational comparison.

Notes

Distinct upper-body spots, six caudal bands, three rear-body stripes, a relatively slender outline, and a brownish leading dorsal ray help distinguish it from Brochis leopardus and other similar named or numbered fishes.

Armored catfishes can take atmospheric oxygen through a specialized intestine, accounting for occasional surface gulps. Exercise care around rigid pectoral spines: punctures can be painful, and nearby gland secretions are suspected of mild toxicity.
