Overview
Reaching about 9 cm standard length, Brochis britskii requires more floor space than many small cory catfishes. Its deep profile and numerous dorsal rays help identification, although ray counts overlap with some relatives.
Distribution & habitat
It is restricted to the upper Paraguay drainage in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The type locality lies in marginal lakes near Poconé. Groups use smaller tributaries and quiet waters, including backwaters and oxbow or marginal lakes.
Aquarium setup
Provide at least a 120 by 45 cm footprint. Fine sand is preferable, with clean rounded gravel an alternative. Add shelter without losing the floor space needed by the group.
Diet & feeding
Use sinking prepared foods and varied small live or frozen items. Direct feeding is essential for this omnivore; tankmate leftovers should not be its staple.
Behaviour & compatibility
Maintain at least six to eight together. The species is peaceful and naturally forms aggregations.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult females are somewhat larger, rounder, and deeper-bodied than males.
Notes
Dorsal-ray counts range from about fifteen to eighteen, most often fifteen. Because this overlaps with certain relatives, use the count as part of an identification rather than alone. Intestinal air breathing allows occasional surface gulps. Pectoral spines can puncture skin, and associated secretions may be mildly toxic, so handle with care.
