Overview

The curved dark stripe of Brochis arcuata is distinctive but not unique among related catfishes. Snout shape, the stripe’s relationship to the eye, and adult size all help separate look-alikes.

Distribution & habitat

It is generally reported across the upper Amazon region of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, above the Negro confluence. Negro records extend toward São Gabriel da Cachoeira. The type specimen came from an aquarium, so its locality is uncertain, possibly Tefé. Similar fishes in the region complicate interpretation of the wider records.

Aquarium setup

Fine sand or clean rounded gravel is appropriate. Provide enough shelter for the group to settle securely.

Diet & feeding

Offer varied sinking prepared foods and small live or frozen items. Direct feeding is necessary; leftovers alone do not meet the needs of this omnivorous forager.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep at least four to six together to accommodate its peaceful social behavior.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females tend to be larger and broader-bodied, particularly when gravid.

Notes

In Hoplisoma urucu, the snout is rounder and the dark stripe stops behind the eye. Other “super arcuatus” look-alikes grow substantially larger, with an elongated snout in the long-nosed form. Occasional surface gulps supply supplementary air. Avoid direct pressure on the stiff pectoral spines when handling; punctures are painful and associated secretions may be mildly toxic.
