Overview

Variable spotted patterns contribute to frequent confusion between Brochis ambiacus and B. agassizii. Fish matching the former’s large anterior dorsal patch, extending onto the back around the fin base, appear more common in trade.

Distribution & habitat

The type locality is the Ampiyacu in northeastern Peru. Additional records include the Javari, Napo, Nanay, and lower Ucayali systems. The apparent range spans many upper-Amazon tributaries from the Brazil–Peru–Colombia border region toward Iquitos, with Ecuadorian records in tributaries of the Napo.

Aquarium setup

Use fine sand or scrupulously maintained rounded gravel. Include cover for security while leaving the decorative style flexible.

Diet & feeding

A varied combination of sinking dry foods and small live or frozen items suits this omnivore. Feed it directly; scavenging scraps is not an adequate feeding plan.

Behaviour & compatibility

A group of at least four to six supports its peaceful, gregarious habits.

Sexual dimorphism

Females generally grow larger and become broader-bodied at maturity, especially when carrying eggs.

Notes

Other original characters include an elongated snout, brown flank spots on a pale ground, four brown tail bands, and a spotted anal fin. In comparison, the original B. agassizii account emphasizes entirely black anterior dorsal rays. Use multiple characters because the pattern’s variation within and between populations is unresolved. Occasional surface gulps aid respiration. Pectoral spines can puncture skin, and their associated secretions may have mildly toxic properties.
