Overview
Uncommon in trade, Brochis amandajanea appears to vary in the size of its dark body spots. That variation calls for caution in identification. Its basic aquarium needs include a peaceful group, a clean substrate, and deliberate feeding.
Distribution & habitat
The recorded type locality is in the Miuã stream system near the upper Negro in Brazil, possibly the Uarinabe stream some 10–12 km from the confluence. It appears to lie near São Gabriel da Cachoeira in Amazonas, but that geographic interpretation remains tentative.
Aquarium setup
Fine sand is preferable, with clean rounded gravel as an alternative. Provide cover so the group can retreat and feel secure.
Diet & feeding
Feed this omnivore with sinking foods and small live or frozen supplements. Vary the diet and make sure food reaches the fish directly rather than relying on leftovers.
Behaviour & compatibility
Keep at least four to six together to support its peaceful social behavior.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult females are generally larger and broader than males, with the difference particularly apparent when gravid.
Notes
A related species was described from the same locality, suggesting possible shared occurrence rather than proving it. Supplementary air breathing can produce occasional surface visits. Handle carefully around the stiff pectoral spines, which can puncture skin; associated secretions may be mildly toxic.
