Overview
Identification is a central concern with Brochis agassizii. Similar spotted catfishes are often sold under its name, and locality alone may not resolve the confusion. Examine fin markings and body pattern together.
Distribution & habitat
Described from near Tabatinga in Brazil, it comes from the Amazon border region with Peru. Records from the Nanay suggest a range extending upstream toward Iquitos, but the full distribution remains uncertain. Proximity to the Colombian border does not by itself establish occurrence there.
Aquarium setup
Provide fine sand or well-maintained rounded gravel and enough cover for security. The precise decorative layout can otherwise be flexible.
Diet & feeding
Offer sinking prepared foods alongside small live and frozen items. This omnivorous forager needs direct, varied feeding and should not rely on scraps left by other fishes.
Behaviour & compatibility
A peaceful group of at least four to six accommodates its social behavior.
Sexual dimorphism
Females tend to grow larger and become noticeably broader at maturity, particularly when carrying eggs.
Notes
The common look-alike B. ambiacus appears more frequent in trade. The original description of B. agassizii emphasizes black anterior dorsal rays, a paler spotted remainder, and several rows of brown tail spots. In the look-alike, dorsal black can extend onto the back around the fin base. Pattern variation complicates identification. Occasional surface gulps provide supplementary air breathing. Handle carefully because pectoral spines can puncture skin; associated gland secretions may also have mildly toxic properties.
