Overview

Broad dark bands across a pale yellowish body characterize adult Brachyplatystoma juruense. The bands may be vertical, oblique, or branching. This is a large-river predator for public aquariums or unusually well-equipped private facilities, not a routine home-tank catfish.

Distribution & habitat

First described from the Juruá in northwestern Brazil, it occurs more widely in the middle Amazon and Orinoco systems and their tributaries. Large deep channels, including whitewater rapids, are the usual setting.

Aquarium setup

Sand and substantial wood, or a practical sparse arrangement, suit management better than intricate planting. Keep lighting subdued and filtration both very large and reliable. Strict maintenance is essential. Adult requirements should determine the facility rather than the space a young fish initially occupies.

Diet & feeding

Its natural diet is almost entirely fish, including bottom-associated catfish. Most adapt to suitable nonliving shrimp, shellfish, squid, and fish pieces. Adults require no more than a weekly meal.

Behaviour & compatibility

Companions must be too large to swallow; smaller fish are prey.

Notes

Young fish can be confused with Brachyplatystoma tigrinum. Less sharply defined markings, a deeper body, and shorter barbels help distinguish this species. Juvenile flank spots expand into the adult bands, and tail filaments persist. Colorful trade forms do not yet establish distinct geographic populations.
