Overview

Botia dario, the Bengal loach, often has a yellow-to-gold background with 7–9 dark bands separated by finer pale markings. Its strongly curved head profile is another useful clue. Group housing and ample space matter even though it is not considered especially aggressive.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs widely through the middle and lower Ganges and Brahmaputra systems in northern India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. Detailed habitat information is limited. A riverine lifestyle and some seasonal migration are plausible, especially in the very wet parts of its range, but specific migration routes are not established.

Aquarium setup

Allow a footprint of at least about 120 × 45 cm. Sand or fine gravel, smooth stones, and woody roots and branches provide a network of retreats. Shade-tolerant plants add cover. Remove sharp edges, close holes that could trap fish, and fit the lid securely.

Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate movement rather than severe turbulence. Use a biologically mature aquarium and prevent organic waste accumulation. Weekly changes of about 30–50% should be part of regular maintenance.

Diet & feeding

Natural foods described for Botia include aquatic mollusks, insects, worms, and other invertebrates, with plant matter and soft leaves also taken. Provide varied prepared foods, live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, Artemia, and similar items, plus cucumber, melon, blanched spinach, or other suitable plant foods. Mixed gel foods can be useful, while chopped earthworms should be limited.

Snail consumption does not make this a specialized solution to an infestation. Settled fish are often bold feeders and sometimes move into midwater at mealtimes.

Behaviour & compatibility

Its size and activity can intimidate smaller fishes, and trailing fins may be nipped. Avoid markedly smaller, slow, or long-finned companions. Peaceful, compatible-sized fishes using open water are better candidates; other loaches and bottom dwellers still require individual assessment.

Social hierarchy is important in the genus. Keep at least five or six, preferably ten or more. Single fish may withdraw or direct aggression at similar-looking companions. In a pair or trio, the dominant individual may suppress the others until they stop eating. Adequate numbers and multiple shelters are important.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females are normally fuller-bodied than males.

Breeding

Hormonal induction is used in commercial production of this species, while successful natural breeding in home aquaria has not been confirmed. Hybrid botiids also circulate in trade. Commercial reproduction should not be mistaken for an established home-breeding procedure.

Notes

Bands can divide or merge with age and individual variation, and the background ranges from bright yellow to darker greenish tones. Botia macrolineata is treated as the same species; its supposed Bombay origin reflected shipping information rather than a reliable natural locality. The name Botia geto also involves historical confusion over juvenile identification.

Social observations in botiids include temporary fading during rank disputes, young fish shadowing larger ones, clicking, and continuous group circuits. Their functions remain uncertain. Sideways or vertically wedged resting can be normal, whereas persistent weight loss warrants attention. Erected spines below the eyes can snag nets or puncture skin when fish are handled.
