Overview

The red-orange Betta tussyae has two darker flank stripes and faint gold bars on the gill covers. A small bubble nester specialized for peat-swamp blackwater, it needs stable, extremely soft acidic water and plentiful shade.

Distribution & habitat

It is endemic to coastal Pahang and Terengganu in eastern Peninsular Malaysia. Locality labels such as Chukai, Rompin, and Terengganu help preserve population identity and breeding lines.

Peat swamps and connected blackwater streams offer dense rainforest shade, dark humic water with very few minerals, and leaf-, branch-, and root-covered bottoms. Seasonal water loss can force fish into moist litter for weeks.

Aquarium setup

A footprint around 45 × 30 cm or larger suits a pair or small group. Roots, wood, pots, and tubes provide retreats. Leaves support shelter and microbial growth useful to fry; natural peat is unnecessary.

Use dim light with floating and shade-tolerant plants. Acidic water with negligible carbonate hardness and very low general hardness may require reverse osmosis. Gentle filtration is enough. Secure the cover against jumping while retaining humid breathing air above the water.

Diet & feeding

Insects and small invertebrates are likely natural food. Captive fish generally learn to take dry foods, but should frequently receive live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. Avoid overfeeding.

Behaviour & compatibility

An ordinary community is unsuitable because larger or active fish can intimidate it and monopolize meals. Dedicated housing is usually best; companions must be exceptionally mild and environmentally compatible. A group is possible with ample cover and interrupted sight lines, although a separate pair is preferable for breeding.

Sexual dimorphism

Males develop substantially stronger coloration and longer fins at maturity.

Breeding

Provide numerous female retreats. The male builds inside a tube or container, beneath a leaf, or among floating plants, excluding her until completion. Prior separation is unnecessary. The female pales and develops dark flank bars before repeated embraces release eggs beneath the nest. She catches eggs with her pelvic fins; he transfers them upward while she retrieves loose eggs.

Adults can usually stay, but the male alone guards the completed brood. Eggs hatch in about 24–48 hours. Larvae remain in the nest another 3–4 days while absorbing yolk, with fallen young retrieved by the male. Care fades at free swimming, and the adults usually spare their offspring.

Warm, humid air beneath a close-fitting lid supports labyrinth development. Fry immediately accept microworms and Artemia nauplii. Offer small, varied meals two or three times daily without excessive Artemia use, and perform regular small water changes.

Notes

There is no central flank blotch or green iridescent spotting on the median fins. Similar red bettas require checking several features together, including gill-cover bars, flank stripes, and locality.
