Betta pallifina

Overview

Betta pallifina is a large paternal mouthbrooder from remote Bornean streams. Females carry an orange anal-fin band. Compatible partners, shelter, and minimal disturbance during incubation are central to its care.

Distribution & habitat

Known collections are restricted to a remote section of the upper Barito drainage in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Forest headwater streams contain clear flowing water, dense marginal growth, and submerged plant patches. Photographs suggest a mixture of sand and leaves on the bottom, rather than establishing a complete substrate description.

Aquarium setup

Use wood, branches, pots, or short pipes to create several shaded retreats. Leaves add cover and microbial growth. Either decorated accommodation or a bare base for easier maintenance can be used.

Keep lighting subdued, add appropriate low-light and floating plants, and run mature sponge filtration gently. A secure lid prevents jumping while leaving humid air and breathing space above the water. Groups need considerably more room than a pair.

Diet & feeding

Insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton are considered probable natural foods. Acclimated fish generally accept dry products, supplemented with water fleas, Artemia, bloodworms, and similar live or frozen foods. Large individuals may receive an occasional earthworm. Avoid excessive portions.

Behaviour & compatibility

Dedicated housing is preferable, using a compatible pair for breeding; groups require a large aquarium. Large or competitive companions can intimidate it. Natural partner selection is preferable to an arbitrary male–female combination, which may end with the weaker fish killed. Even established pairs can become confrontational when cramped.

Sexual dimorphism

Males grow larger, with broader heads, more iridescent scales, and longer fins. The orange band near the outer anal-fin edge helps recognize females.

Breeding

Male displays precede repeated embraces and batches of eggs. Both parents may collect eggs, but the female passes hers to the male. He incubates them for approximately 10–17 days.

Disturbed males readily swallow broods. Leaving the female present can avoid catching-related disruption, but persistent harassment or predation requires careful removal. Young have been reared separately, beside the male, or with both parents.

Warm, humid nursery air supports labyrinth development. Microworms and Artemia nauplii are suitable starter foods. Feed varied small meals several times daily without overfeeding, which readily causes intestinal trouble. Daily water changes of about 5–10% help prevent waste buildup.

Notes

A lance-shaped tail and the female's orange anal-fin band contribute to recognition. Similar relatives still require multiple characters and reliable provenance.
