概述

Betta kuehnei

Overview

Betta kuehnei is a paternal mouthbrooder with rounded tails in both sexes. Mature males show intense blue or blue-green reflection across the head and throat. Quiet, sheltered accommodation suits it better than a busy community.

Distribution & habitat

Records come from Kelantan in northeastern Peninsular Malaysia and neighboring Narathiwat in southern Thailand. The interpretation of the precise type-locality place name remains tentative. Its documented habitat is a shaded, clear forest stream, with fish collected in shallow vegetation and leaf accumulations.

Aquarium setup

Provide at least a 60 × 30 cm footprint for a pair or small group. Wood, branches, pots, and pipes create shaded retreats; leaves add cover and microbial growth. A furnished substrate or a bare floor can be used according to maintenance needs.

Use subdued light, tolerant plants, floating vegetation, and gently running mature sponge filtration. Secure the cover against jumping, preserve humid air above the water, and leave breathing access to the surface.

Diet & feeding

Insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton are considered likely natural prey. Acclimated fish generally accept dry food, supplemented with water fleas, Artemia, bloodworms, and similar live or frozen items. Small feeder insects can be fed before use. Avoid excessive portions.

Behaviour & compatibility

Pairs and groups are possible, but dedicated accommodation or exceptionally gentle companions is preferable. Large, energetic, or competitive feeders may suppress it. Match water requirements and feeding behavior before attempting a combination.

Sexual dimorphism

Males generally become larger and broader-headed, with more head iridescence and longer fins. The lower longitudinal flank stripe is often clearer in females.

Breeding

Repeated embraces produce batches of eggs, initially supported by the male's anal fin. The female retrieves and passes them to him. He incubates the brood for approximately 9–16 days before releasing swimming young.

Stress or inexperience can cause swallowing or premature release. Avoid unnecessary disturbance from catching the female or other fish. Fry can be reared separately or with their parents; reports of faster growth beside adults should not be treated as a guaranteed result.

Maintain warm, humid nursery air for labyrinth development. Microworms and Artemia nauplii are suitable first foods. Provide varied small meals two or three times daily without excessive reliance on the latter, and use regular modest water changes.

Notes

It may be the same species as the fish traded as Betta sp. ‘Satun’, but this remains uncertain. The combination of a rounded tail, blue head and throat, and flank stripes assists recognition.
