概述
Betta cracens

Overview
Betta cracens is a slender paternal mouthbrooder whose identity deserves particular care. Authentic specimens are uncommon in the hobby, and fish sold under the name are frequently other close relatives.
Distribution & habitat
Confirmed material comes from south of Jambi City in Sumatra, Indonesia; occurrence on Bangka remains possible. The type site was a forest-swamp stream with dense aquatic vegetation in places and some surrounding land converted to rubber cultivation. Fish traded under a Bangka designation came from shallow, clear forest hill streams containing leaves and fallen twigs, but their precise identity remains relevant.
Aquarium setup
Allow at least an 80 × 30 cm footprint for a pair or small group. Wood, branches, pots, and pipes can divide the aquarium into shaded retreats. Leaves add shelter and microbial food for small fry, while a bare floor offers easier cleaning.
Subdued light, tolerant plants, and floating vegetation suit the setting. Mature sponge filtration should circulate water gently. Fit a secure cover, retain humid air above the water, and leave the surface accessible for breathing; these fish jump well.
Diet & feeding
Insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton are thought to form the natural diet. Established fish usually learn to accept dry food. Supplement regularly with small live or frozen water fleas, Artemia, and bloodworms, keeping portions controlled.
Behaviour & compatibility
Pairs and groups can both be maintained, but an ordinary community aquarium is often unsuitable. Large, busy, or competitive feeders can intimidate and outcompete them. Choose only gentle companions with matching conditions and verify that every fish obtains food.
Sexual dimorphism
Males are generally larger and broader-headed, with more iridescence on the head and more extended fins.
Breeding
Females usually initiate courtship and defend the spawning area. Repeated embraces release batches of eggs; the female collects them and passes them to the male. Oral incubation lasts about 12–18 days before swimming young emerge.
Reports of adults eating their young vary. The female and any companions can be removed carefully a few days after spawning, avoiding disturbance that might cause the male to swallow the eggs or release them prematurely. He may be removed once fry feed independently.
Warm, humid air over the nursery supports labyrinth development. Microworms and Artemia nauplii are suitable initial moving foods; offer varied small meals two or three times daily without relying excessively on the latter. Regular modest water changes are preferable to large abrupt replacements.
Notes
A very slender profile and narrow blue outer anal-fin margin in both sexes help identification, but similar relatives require a combination of characters. The trade label Betta sp. ‘Bangka’ has also been used.
