Overview

The dark wine-red Betta burdigala is a small bubble-nesting fish endemic to Bangka. Genuine examples are uncommon in the aquarium trade, and many fish labeled with this name belong to similar species. Reliable provenance is therefore especially useful.

Distribution & habitat

It is restricted to Bangka Island off eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. Peat swamps and associated blackwater streams provide heavily shaded, extremely low-mineral conditions over leaves, branches, and roots. Seasonal drying can leave fish dependent on damp litter.

Aquarium setup

Provide numerous retreats with wood, roots, pots, or tubing. Dried leaves supply shelter and support microorganisms. Use subdued light, shade-tolerant plants, and floating cover. Maintain very soft acidic water with low carbonate hardness and gentle filtration. A secure lid both prevents escape and preserves humid air above the water.

Diet & feeding

Insects and small invertebrates are probable natural prey. Captive fish often learn to accept dry food, but regular small live or frozen water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms should provide variety. Avoid excessive feeding.

Behaviour & compatibility

A species setup focused on maintaining and breeding a stable population is preferable. Carefully selected quiet fishes with similar needs may coexist. Reports of multiple pairs and harems conflict, with persistent attacks by dominant individuals in some groups. Pair housing is easier to supervise.

Sexual dimorphism

Males develop stronger coloration and longer fins. Before laying, females become paler and display dark vertical bars.

Breeding

Males build bubble nests inside tubes, beneath leaves, or among surface vegetation. Females need plenty of retreat space. Embraces yield small batches transferred into the nest. Broods usually contain fewer than twenty eggs, although larger batches approaching fifty occur.

Adults normally remain after spawning while the male alone tends the eggs. Hatching takes about one or two days, followed by three or four more days in the nest. Fallen young are retrieved. Free-swimming fry are usually left unharmed and can take microworms and brine shrimp nauplii. Feed small varied portions, retain warm moist air, and use regular modest water changes.

Notes

A short rounded snout, absence of a large iridescent side blotch, and green patches near the bases of the dorsal and anal fins are useful clues. Some look-alikes share enough of these features that closer morphological examination remains necessary.
