Overview

Baryancistrus xanthellus includes historical forms labeled L018, L085, L177, and LDA060. Broad yellowish fin borders in juveniles shrink to small tip marks in adults, while pale body spots remain useful for recognition. Male territoriality intensifies with maturity.

Distribution & habitat

It is endemic to the Xingu drainage in Pará, Brazil, occurring in the Volta Grande main channel and the middle to lower Iriri. Main-channel populations have been coded L018 and L085, while Iriri fish are associated with L177.

The species primarily inhabits rapids. Juveniles gather beneath flat rocks in shallow stretches, and adults shelter among submerged rocks and boulders.

Aquarium setup

Provide at least a 120 × 45 cm footprint for long-term maintenance. Arrange rocks, gravel, boulders, wood, and roots into a river setting. Hardy attached plants are optional. Bright light can encourage grazing growth, while structural barriers limit direct confrontations.

Warm, well-oxygenated water and substantial movement are essential. It does not thrive in cool conditions. Weekly changes of approximately 40–70% help prevent organic accumulation. Newly imported members of the genus may need quarantine, acclimation, and initially several meals daily to recover condition.

Diet & feeding

Wild gut contents consisted mostly of diatoms and filamentous algae, with smaller quantities of invertebrates such as midge larvae and bryozoans. Preserve grazing surfaces, supplement with vegetable-containing sinking food and fresh produce, and add moderate animal foods such as bloodworms. Thawed shrimp meat can be occasional food; mixed gel preparations are another option.

Behaviour & compatibility

Young fish are relatively tolerant. Adult males can become strongly aggressive toward conspecifics and other perceived territorial threats. Companions using different areas are preferable. Combining adults with other catfishes requires a very large aquarium, separate territories, and visual barriers.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males develop broader, slightly flatter heads and longer pectoral-fin spines.

Breeding

A single breeding is reported for possibly conspecific L081. Because that identity is unresolved, it does not establish a confirmed breeding procedure for this species. Ample room, oxygen, and nutrition are considered relevant to attempts.

Whether L081 also belongs here remains uncertain. Keep original locality and number information. Shrinking fin borders are a normal age-related change, and the unplated abdomen is a localized anatomical feature rather than a description of the whole body.
