Overview

The rough head and prominent dorsal humps give Bagarius suchus a crocodilian appearance. Adult size and river-rapid requirements matter more than that striking look: ordinary home aquaria are unsuitable, and long-term care requires very large specialist facilities.

Distribution & habitat

Known records come from the Mekong system in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, and Thailand’s Chao Phraya basin. Turbulent reaches of large rivers provide boulders and rock crevices used as shelter.

Aquarium setup

Provide subdued light and generous shelters made from large rocks, wood, or suitable piping. High oxygen and substantial water movement are essential. Use a large mature filtration system and weekly 50–70% changes, remembering that strong flow alone does not ensure clean water.

Diet & feeding

This predator feeds naturally on small fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and other invertebrates, usually adapting to dead foods in captivity. Scale small worms and chopped shrimp for juveniles up to suitable fish strips, whole shrimp, mussels, and larger earthworms. Avoid mammalian or avian meat and routine feeder fish.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep it alone. Absence of active chasing does not establish compatibility with animals that could be swallowed.

Notes

Useful identification features include the exposed rough skull and predorsal plate, sharp ridges, and prominent humps before and behind the adipose fin. Assess the full combination rather than relying on general resemblance to another member of the genus.
