Overview

Identity confusion surrounding Bagarius bagarius makes a small-catfish sales description unsafe for planning housing. The name has been applied to fish with very different apparent adult sizes. Public displays or exceptionally large specialist facilities are the appropriate scale, with provenance checked before acquisition.

Distribution & habitat

Records extend from the Indus through the Ganges and Brahmaputra systems to Myanmar, mainland Southeast Asia, and the Malay Peninsula. Indian and Southeast Asian populations may not be conspecific, leaving the range uncertain. Fish are typically found among boulders in turbulent rapids of large rivers.

Aquarium setup

Use subdued lighting and substantial refuges formed by rocks, wood, or suitable lengths of pipe. Large mature filtration, considerable water movement, and high oxygen levels are essential, together with weekly 50–70% changes and rigorous upkeep. Juvenile housing does not resolve the long-term facility requirement.

Diet & feeding

Natural prey includes fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. Dead foods are usually accepted in captivity. Offer young fish small worms and chopped shrimp, progressing to suitable fish pieces, whole shrimp, mussels, and larger earthworms.

Avoid mammalian and avian meat, and do not rely on feeder fish with their associated disease, parasite, and nutritional risks.

Behaviour & compatibility

Single-species, individual housing is preferable. An inconspicuous fish resting among rocks still presents a predation risk to potential companions.

Notes

Some fish sold under this name have been regarded as small, while another interpretation links Indian-subcontinent material with a much larger form. An unverified label should therefore not determine adult-size expectations or identification.
