概述

Badis kyar

Overview

The slender badid Badis kyar has comparatively solid dark flank bars and a dark band across the tail peduncle rather than a discrete eyespot. It needs more noticeable current than most congeners, making a wholly still-water arrangement inappropriate.

Distribution & habitat

Known records are from northern Myanmar's upper Ayeyarwady system: streams around Myitkyina in Kachin State and a locality in the lower Shweli farther south.

The type stream is about 1 m deep in the dry season, with clear, moderately flowing water over sand and pebbles through secondary forest and farmland. Grasses and submerged Cryptocoryne occur near the bank. This fish uses the faster central flow; Badis corycaeus occupies moving margins, while Dario hysginon uses still edge pools.

Aquarium setup

Create sheltered areas with sand or gravel, smooth stones, roots, and branches. Leaves, floating plants, and attached Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, or Anubias can be included. Light need not be strong, but provide a visible current somewhat greater than in a typical Badis aquarium.

Coconut shells or accessible clay pots can serve as caves. Separate sites and sight lines for different males. Water should be neutral to alkaline but still soft; a higher pH does not automatically imply high hardness.

Seasonal temperature variation is tolerated. Heating may be unnecessary only where room conditions remain suitable throughout the year. A gentle rise within the normal range can encourage breeding activity, without treating brief tolerance of extremes as a long-term target.

Diet & feeding

Members of the genus take small crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and zooplankton. Dry foods may be refused, so offer regular small live or frozen Artemia, Daphnia, and similar prey. Watch these deliberate feeders to ensure companions do not take everything.

Bloodworms and Tubifex are associated with obesity and health concerns and are best excluded from the routine menu.

Behaviour & compatibility

A species aquarium simplifies care. It is not a shoaling fish; use a pair or one male with several females where space is limited. Multiple males need individual territories, caves, and visual barriers.

Potential companions should be peaceful upper-water fishes that do not dominate feeding. Avoid large active species and similar territorial bottom dwellers. Keep different Badis species apart because hybridization is possible. Ornamental shrimp and their young may be eaten.

Sexual dimorphism

Females are smaller, duller, and rounder in profile. Mature males are more elongated and develop slightly extended fins.

Breeding

A dependable aquarium breeding procedure for this species is not established. Cave-spawning experience with relatives can inform an attempt, but success with congeners is not direct validation here.

Related species form temporary pairs. Conditioned males intensify their colors, challenge rivals, and may lock mouths while drawing females into caves. Batches commonly contain about 30–100 eggs, after which the male excludes the female and guards and fans the brood. For fry production, omit other species and give each male a separate cave.

In those relatives, eggs generally hatch after two to three days. Fry swim freely around six to eight days old and may remain near the cave for another week. Adults, including the father, can then eat dispersing young, making separation advisable. Microworms suit initially inactive fry, with Artemia nauplii added once they swim in the water column. Any application to this species requires observation of the actual brood.

Notes

Compared with the similarly slender Badis pyema, the flank bars are generally more solid and uniform rather than rows of irregular spots. The tail peduncle carries a band instead of a separate blotch on each side. Some finer bars can split in comparisons with other relatives, so one marking alone is insufficient for identification.
