Overview
Astyanax kennedyi is a small Peruvian characid seldom sold as a dedicated aquarium species. Occasional individuals arrive mixed with other wild-caught fishes. Despite its modest size, it should not be housed with very tiny companions because predation is possible.
Distribution & habitat
Its known range is the upper Amazon region of Peru around Iquitos.
Aquarium setup
An Amazon-inspired layout suits it: use sand, wood, branching roots, and tannin-tinted water. Dried beech or oak leaves can add a layer of natural cover. A planted aquarium is another suitable option, combining sheltered areas with room for movement.
Diet & feeding
It apparently feeds on invertebrates and smaller fishes in the wild. Offer plenty of suitably sized live and frozen foods in captivity, together with good-quality dry products. The suggested natural diet warrants caution around extremely small tankmates, even though detailed feeding information is limited.
Behaviour & compatibility
Communities of similarly sized, peaceful fishes are generally suitable. Possible companions include other characids, South American cichlids that do not prey on fish, and members of the armored catfish families Callichthyidae and Loricariidae. Exclude exceptionally small species that might be swallowed.
Sexual dimorphism
Females have a rounder profile than males, particularly when carrying eggs.
Breeding
Aquarium reproduction is not reliably documented. A successful method for a related species should therefore not be presented as an established breeding procedure for this fish.
