Aspidoras taurus

Overview

A compact armored catfish from Brazil's Paraguay drainage, Aspidoras taurus benefits from company and a well-established aquarium. Clean, stable conditions and deliberate feeding matter more than any supposed role as a scavenging cleaner.

Distribution & habitat

Its known range comprises the upper Itiquira and Taquari rivers in Mato Grosso, both within the Paraguay system. The type locality lies on the Itiquira near Alto Garças.

Aquarium setup

Fine sand is the preferred substrate. Smooth gravel is an alternative only if kept very clean. Other furnishings are flexible, but include sheltered spaces so the group can retreat.

Introduce it only after the biological system has matured. Water conditions should remain stable and free of accumulated pollution.

Diet & feeding

Members of Aspidoras are foraging omnivores. In captivity, sinking prepared foods can be combined with small live or frozen bloodworms and aquatic worms.

Provide a varied ration specifically for these fish and check that food reaches them. Scraps left by tankmates are not a dependable diet, and the fish cannot substitute for routine aquarium cleaning.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is peaceful and social. A group of at least four to six provides appropriate conspecific company.

Notes

Trade specimens are sometimes labeled Aspidoras menezesi, which is a separate valid species. Identification involves the thick skin obscuring several head bones and the reduced nuchal plate, together with a greatly shortened lateral line. A robust appearance alone is insufficient to distinguish the two.
