English
Overview
From Spain's Mediterranean coast, Apricaphanius iberus is best maintained as a locality-documented breeding project. Its life history is rapid: most live less than two years, mature early, and spawn repeatedly within a season. Regular food, extensive shelter, and a cooler winter support long-term population maintenance.
Distribution & habitat
Remaining localities are concentrated in Catalonia, Valencia, and Murcia. A formerly more continuous range has fragmented under pressure from introduced competitors, tourism and agricultural development, and pollution. Atlantic Spanish and Algerian populations once included here are treated as separate species.
Shallow lagoons, salt marshes, and streams commonly support abundant plants or algae during warm months. Populations occupy fresh through highly saline waters, including salt-production sites. Where introduced competitors or predators occur, fish may be restricted toward saltier coastal refuges.
Aquarium setup
Use fine yarn mops, moss, hornwort, and filamentous algae to provide shelter and egg attachment surfaces. Females and subordinate males need places to avoid dominant fish. Bare bottoms or inert sand and gravel are acceptable; strong flow is unnecessary.
Choose salinity according to locality. Some stocks suit freshwater, while the general maintenance recommendation for many is marine salt at about 1–3 g/L. Provide several cool winter months instead of constant warmth, which may impair fecundity and longevity. Outdoor housing and natural sunlight depend on a suitable local climate.
Diet & feeding
Genus-level feeding guidance calls for regular small live or frozen brine shrimp, water fleas, and bloodworms, especially during intensive spring and summer reproduction. Most fish accept dry foods. Include a quality Spirulina-containing preparation if filamentous algae are absent.
Behaviour & compatibility
Spawning aggression and specific water needs favor a dedicated group. Two or three females per male are preferable. Geographic stocks differ genetically and sometimes in pattern, so preserve locality labels and breed them separately.
Sexual dimorphism
Males show silvery bars toward the rear and commonly three or four dark tail bands, with pale blue tones in the fins. Larger, plainer females have small dark flank spots and transparent fins.
Breeding
Maturity often occurs within about three months. Two generations may be produced in a season, and annual output can approach a thousand eggs per female. Repeated small spawnings occur from April through September. Males defend temporary sites, and eggs attach by fine filaments to algae or similar surfaces.
Check material daily because eggs and young may be eaten. Periodically transfer egg-bearing mops or vegetation into separate water matched to the parents' temperature and chemistry. Incubation usually lasts seven to fourteen days; free-swimming fry can take brine-shrimp nauplii or microworms.
Notes
Isolation-related differences are worth preserving instead of mixing similar-looking fish from different places. Historical broad names and later species distinctions should not be conflated in breeding records.
