Overview

A small killifish from Sri Lanka and southern India, Aplocheilus blockii occurs in sheltered lowland waters. Its habitats include both fresh and brackish conditions, often with cover at or above the surface. Vegetation and fine spawning material are useful focal points for care.

Distribution & habitat

Indian records include Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Reports from Pakistan may be mistaken, and some Western Ghats records need confirmation. It favors still or slow lowland waters, frequently near the coast, including mangrove swamps and rice fields with floating or overhanging vegetation.

Aquarium setup

A footprint of at least 45 by 30 cm is suggested. Its preference for sheltered surface habitat can guide planting, while fine-leaved plants, moss, or spawning mops provide egg-laying sites.

Diet & feeding

Related members of the genus hunt aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates at the surface. Aquarium feeding can follow that pattern: many learn to take dry food, supplemented regularly with small live or frozen items such as Artemia, daphnia, and bloodworms.

Breeding

Eggs are placed among available fine plants, moss, filamentous algae, or wool spawning mops. Breeding is generally straightforward. Incubation takes roughly 10–15 days; newly hatched fry need very small, infusoria-sized food before progressing to Artemia nauplii or microworms.
