Overview

Apistogramma brevis is a soft-water dwarf cichlid associated with blackwater habitats. Often relatively peaceful outside reproduction, it forms cave-centered territories when breeding. Since males may harass females, the size and distribution of retreats matter more than simply providing one spawning cave.

Distribution & habitat

Records include the Uaupés basin of northwestern Brazil and the Tiquié in southern Colombia, together with the upper Negro and Orinoco. Slow blackwater streams, tributaries and small rivers lie beneath dense forest shade, with branches and decomposing leaves on the bottom. Dissolved minerals are scarce and some natural sites reach pH 4–5; these observations should be distinguished from general aquarium guidance.

Aquarium setup

An aquarium around 45 × 38 × 30 cm provides a small-tank reference, with additional fish requiring separate consideration of space and territory. Use substantial planting, wood and several caves, including entrances too small for the male so the female has a retreat. Keep light moderate to low and circulation gentle.

Leaf litter can supply organic compounds and resemble the natural setting, but decomposition can also increase pollution. Monitor conditions rather than treating leaves as a maintenance-free acidifying device. General care guidance is 26–28 °C and pH 6–7 with very soft water; breeding particularly benefits from soft, acidic conditions.

Diet & feeding

Offer varied meals combining suitable cichlid pellets or flakes, live or frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and spirulina- or algae-containing foods.

Behaviour & compatibility

Small peaceful characins, cyprinids and catfishes with matching needs are possible companions. Breeding brings territorial defense and potential male harassment. A dedicated aquarium may use one male with at least three females, but only with enough space and separated caves for individual female territories; this is not a recommendation to crowd that group into the small-tank reference above.

Sexual dimorphism

Males are larger and develop extensions to the dorsal, anal and caudal fins.

Breeding

Spawning occurs inside a cave. The guarding female drives away intruders, potentially including the male. Eggs hatch after about three days, and fry swim freely four or five days later. Newly hatched brine shrimp can be offered initially, followed by adult foods as size permits. Both parents may care well for the young, but a female that rejects the male requires close management of their coexistence.

The species carries the identification code A168 and is the representative of the brevis group. Such codes aid communication but do not replace reliable origin data and morphological identification.
