Overview
Aphyosemion bualanum, the Bouala lyretail, is a killifish of the upper Benue and Mayo Kébbi drainages and has been assessed as endangered. Its name was historically applied to other lyretails, so older records require care when identifying the fish involved.
Distribution & habitat
Confirmed areas lie in northern Cameroon, western Central African Republic, and southeastern Chad. Presence farther west in eastern Nigeria remains possible. The original locality was recorded as “Buala, Cameroon,” but the place now corresponds to Bouala within Central African Republic; historical wording should not be interpreted using present-day borders.
Notes
Before 1990, several populations of Aphyosemion elberti were incorrectly called A. bualanum. Reliable locality and identification records therefore matter more than an old label alone.
