概述
Annamia cf. thuathienensis

Overview
The Vietnamese hillstream loach Annamia cf. thuathienensis has an unresolved identity. Care centers on a mature, clean, oxygen-rich stream aquarium, while much of its presumed ecology comes from comparison with a relative rather than direct study of this fish.
Distribution & habitat
The description concerns the Bô River in central Vietnam's Thua Thien-Hue region, with no additional definite sites given. Its habitat is poorly established. Shallow clear streams and rocky rapids are suggested by comparison with Annamia normani; observations of adults in rapids and juveniles in shallower water concern that relative.
Aquarium setup
Provide approximately 120 × 30 cm or more of floor space. Combine sand or gravel with rounded stones of varied sizes and optional woody roots. Strong illumination supports growth on exposed surfaces. Hardy attached plants, such as Java fern or anubias, can be tried.
High oxygen availability and circulation are essential; turnover around ten to fifteen aquarium volumes per hour is suggested, with extra pumps or aeration where needed. Change roughly 30–50% weekly and prevent organic waste from accumulating. Established biofilm and stable biological filtration are prerequisites.
Diet & feeding
Research on A. normani found adults biting cyanobacterial crusts from rocks, while juveniles consumed detritus. Whether the same specialization applies here, or even to every population of that relative, remains uncertain.
Maintain ample grazing surfaces and offer algae-rich prepared foods alongside suitable bloodworms, Tubifex, or Artemia. Newly imported hillstream loaches may be emaciated. A narrowed body between the paired fins merits particular attention; weak fish need continuous suitable food without competitors until they recover.
Behaviour & compatibility
The fish is generally peaceful, but companions must share its environmental requirements. Appropriate stream cyprinids, gobies, or catfish can be considered, while some loaches may squabble.
Large wild aggregations are known within the genus. Eight or more is the recommended captive group; isolated fish or very small groups tend to remain shy.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females may be somewhat larger and fuller than males. This remains a tentative guide.
Breeding
Captive reproduction has not been recorded. Seasonal spawning in the wild is presumed.
Notes
The Vietnamese-language description has left significant identification questions, and some catalogs have not accepted the species as valid. Preserve the provisional identification rather than treating it as a settled taxonomic conclusion.
