Overview
The common bristlenose, Ancistrus sp. ‘3’, is widely bred for aquariums and is readily associated with the adult male's head tentacles. Its natural origin and precise identity remain unresolved, so historical labels should not be converted directly into a wild distribution.
Distribution & habitat
Commercial stock has an uncertain original source, and its natural habitat is unknown. A proposed close association with the Argentine Ancistrus cirrhosus is not supported by the genetic evidence discussed in the account. Hybrid ancestry has also been suggested, without being established.
Aquarium setup
Provide at least a 60 × 30 cm footprint for one fish or a breeding pair, increasing space for a group. Decoration is flexible compared with some relatives, provided shelter is plentiful. Maintain well-oxygenated water.
Diet & feeding
Offer a varied combination of sinking foods, water fleas, mosquito larvae, bloodworms, shrimp meat, and suitable fruit or vegetables such as lightly cooked potato. Gel preparations can combine vegetables, spirulina, and animal ingredients. Feed intentionally rather than depending on leftovers.
Behaviour & compatibility
Generally peaceful behavior coexists with territoriality toward conspecifics and similarly shaped fishes. Watch competition for caves and retreats when combining individuals.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature males develop stronger pectoral and gill-cover odontodes and prominent fleshy head tentacles. Females lack similarly extensive development.
Breeding
It deposits eggs in caves, with the male caring for the brood. Aquarium reproduction is routine, and young may appear without special intervention in mature, well-maintained systems.
Notes
Selective breeding has produced piebald, albino, yellow, and long-finned strains. Long-finned fish may be marketed with butterfly or veil terminology. These strain labels do not resolve the uncertain wild identity of the commercial fish.
