Overview
The name Ancistrus dolichopterus has often been misapplied to common bristlenose plecos. True L183 has nine soft dorsal-fin rays. Correct identity matters because its blackwater-stream background calls for stable, clean conditions rather than assumptions based on other bristlenoses.
Distribution & habitat
The most likely range is the middle and lower Negro in Brazil’s Amazonas state. Claims from Guyana or more widely across the Amazon may reflect identification problems. The type locality is simply Manaus. It inhabits flowing streams and tributaries with acidic blackwater.
Aquarium setup
Use at least a 120 by 45 cm base. Sand, tangled roots, and branches reproduce useful shelter; subdued light, attached plants, and leaves can complete the arrangement. Prevent organic-waste accumulation and introduce it only to a stable, biologically established aquarium.
Diet & feeding
Offer varied sinking foods with frozen invertebrates such as water fleas, insect larvae, and shrimp, plus suitable fruit or cooked vegetables. Gel foods can combine vegetables, spirulina, and animal ingredients. A diverse menu is more appropriate than treating it as a dedicated algae remover.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is relatively peaceful toward dissimilar fishes but defends space against conspecifics and similar-looking species. Account for those interactions when arranging shelter and companions.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult males develop prominent pectoral and opercular odontodes and head tentacles that females lack.
Breeding
Eggs are deposited in a cave, with the male responsible for brood care.
