概述

Anatolichthys danfordii

Overview

Anatolichthys danfordii is a Turkish endemic that spawns repeatedly through spring and summer. Males defend temporary territories. Group balance, broken sightlines, a seasonal winter, and careful provenance records matter more than treating it as a decorative community fish.

Distribution & habitat

Records cover the middle and lower Kızıl, lower Yeşil, and upper Seyhan south of Kayseri, including the Sultan Swamps. Historical type-locality wording is confused, so an old Elbistan label cannot alone establish a shared source.

Springs, small streams, and marshes often contain filamentous algae, hornwort, or stonewort. Some sites shrink drastically in summer. Color varies geographically, and irrigation connections have allowed previously separated populations to hybridize. Keep locality labels such as Soysallı and Kırşehir with breeding records.

Aquarium setup

Plan a group aquarium with at least about 120 × 30 cm of floor space. A simple layout is sufficient, provided fine spawning mops, moss, hornwort, and filamentous algae create cover and attachment sites for eggs. Females and subordinate males need routes away from dominant males.

A bare base or inert sand and gravel is suitable, with gentle filtration. Outdoor keeping can work where the local climate is appropriate, and several hours of natural light benefit condition and color. Provide a cool winter lasting several months; continuous warmth may reduce reproductive output and shorten life.

Diet & feeding

Relatives feed on small crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and zooplankton, with some algae and plant matter. Fish can learn to take dry foods, supplemented regularly with live or frozen brine shrimp, Daphnia, and bloodworms. Dietary quality is particularly important during sustained spring and summer reproduction. Include a spirulina-enriched food if filamentous algae are absent.

Behaviour & compatibility

Maintain a dedicated group with two or three females per male and keep populations separate. Its water requirements and breeding pursuit make ordinary community housing unsuitable. Broken sightlines give subordinate fish practical escape routes.

Sexual dimorphism

Males show nine to thirteen gray-black body bars, usually three tail bars, and a yellowish anal fin with dark markings and edging. The dorsal darkens in breeding condition. Larger, plainer females have flank blotches, a roughly round tail-base spot, and mostly transparent fins.

Breeding

Spawning occurs repeatedly, usually from April through September. Males defend temporary territories and court females. Single eggs or small batches attach to algae and other surfaces by fine threads. Adults may consume eggs and fry, so inspect spawning material daily.

Handle the tiny eggs by transferring the material carrying them, avoiding direct contact, or replace entire mops every few days. Incubate under the same temperature and chemistry as the adult aquarium. Hatching generally takes seven to fourteen days, depending on temperature. Free-swimming fry can take newly hatched brine shrimp and microworms immediately.

Notes

Historical confusion involved several related fishes, including the name Aphanius chantrei. Maintaining separate locality lines is more useful than mixing visually similar fish for breeding.
