English
Overview
From Anatolia in Turkey, Anatolichthys anatoliae needs a seasonal cool period and is best approached as a locality-conscious breeding project. Provide abundant refuges and egg-laying material instead of treating it as an ordinary tropical community fish. Breeding males defend temporary territories, and two or three females per male are preferable.
Distribution & habitat
Its central and western Anatolian range includes springs and streams around Lake Tuz, the western Taurus lake district, and parts of the Büyük Menderes system. Pollution, agricultural water removal, and introduced predators have reduced or eliminated some populations.
Local habitats range from freshwater to mildly saline conditions, usually with abundant algae or vegetation. Fish around Lake Tuz occupy peripheral waters rather than the highly saline main lake. In freshwater lakes, reedy margins provide refuge from predators.
Aquarium setup
A simple arrangement works if it breaks lines of sight and gives females and subordinate males escape routes. Fine yarn mops, moss, fine-leaved plants, and filamentous algae offer cover and egg attachment sites. Bare bottoms or inert sand and gravel are options; strong current is unnecessary.
Provide several cool winter months. Continuous warmth may reduce fecundity and longevity. Outdoor maintenance and some daily natural sunlight can benefit condition where the local climate is appropriate, rather than assuming year-round outdoor suitability everywhere.
Diet & feeding
Follow the varied feeding guidance for this genus, offering small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, water fleas, and bloodworms, especially during sustained spring and summer reproduction. Dry foods are usually learned. Include a quality Spirulina-containing preparation when grazing algae are unavailable.
Behaviour & compatibility
Water requirements and spawning aggression favor a dedicated breeding group. Keep two or three females for each male and distribute refuges. Color and fin pattern vary by locality, making separate maintenance of known geographic stocks worthwhile.
Sexual dimorphism
Males carry gray vertical bars toward the rear, a yellowish anal fin edged narrowly in black, and a darkening dorsal fin when breeding. Larger, plainer females show flank blotches, a roughly round caudal-peduncle mark, and clearer fins. Bar number and width vary among populations.
Breeding
Repeated small spawnings commonly occur from April through September. Males establish temporary defended sites and court females. Eggs attach to algae or other surfaces with fine filaments. Egg and fry predation is known within the genus, so inspect spawning material daily.
Transfer attached material without gripping the delicate eggs, or replace entire mops every few days. Keep incubation water matched to the adults in temperature and chemistry. Hatching usually takes seven to fourteen days, and free-swimming fry can take newly hatched brine shrimp or microworms.
Notes
Historical names and population boundaries in this group are complicated, and some lake forms can interbreed. Maintaining locality records is preferable to combining similar-looking stocks indiscriminately.
