Overview
Ameca splendens combines striking male coloration with forceful feeding and social behavior. A dedicated colony is usually easier to manage than a community of delicate fish. This Mexican livebearer supports developing offspring through specialized maternal nutrition rather than simply retaining yolk-fed eggs.
Distribution & habitat
Its range includes the Ameca drainage in Jalisco, including the Teuchitlán tributary, and neighboring Sayula valley populations. Clear springs with abundant aquatic vegetation characterize its habitat.
Aquarium setup
Start with a footprint of at least 90 by 30 cm. Dense planting over a dark bottom helps display the fish's colors. Supply oxygen-rich water and moderate circulation. Effective filtration matters both because the fish produce considerable waste and because declining water quality is poorly tolerated.
Diet & feeding
An enthusiastic omnivore, it accepts a broad selection of aquarium foods. Algae contribute substantially to its natural intake, so provide vegetable foods regularly. Suitable additions include softened spinach, dried seaweed, and spirulina-based flakes.
Behaviour & compatibility
Males can be aggressive, and all individuals compete strongly for food. Robust fish of comparable size may work in a sufficiently spacious community, but a species aquarium is preferred. Males establish social rank through displays and some nipping; permanent injury is uncommon. The dominant male is often recognizable by more intense color and greater activity.
Sexual dimorphism
Males are smaller and brighter, with reflective flank scales and contrasting black and yellow along the tail margin. Their modified, notched anal fin functions in mating. Some mature males develop a notably broad back.
Breeding
Use a well-planted aquarium for either a pair or a breeding group. Females require a new mating for every brood because they do not retain sperm, and they lack a gravid spot. Courtship begins with the female moving diagonally ahead of a male and trembling; his colors intensify before he joins her.
Pregnancy lasts about 55–60 days, followed by roughly 5–30 young. Newborns may approach 1.9 cm and can immediately compete for suitably sized portions of adult food. A cord-like remnant of the nutrient-supplying trophotaenia may remain visible for two or three days. This is normal. Adults only rarely consume their young.
Notes
Reports describing the species as extinct in nature have been contradicted by records of surviving local populations. Captive stocks are well established and include selected color forms, but aquarium abundance does not describe the condition of each wild population.
