雌雄区分
成熟雌鱼通常更加圆润。雄鱼腹面据称有斑点、雌鱼没有，但这一特征应作为辅助而非绝对标准。
繁殖
缸内自然繁殖尚缺少可靠的成功资料。野外在水面植物间筑泡巢并由雄鱼看守的说法仍带有不确定性，不能当作已充分确认的操作流程。

Overview
Amblydoras nauticus is a small, peaceful thorny catfish with a strongly secretive lifestyle. Daytime appearances are uncommon; group foraging after dark is more typical. It suits keepers comfortable with a fish that spends considerable time out of sight.
Distribution & habitat
Described from Nauta in Peru, it may be confined to the Peruvian Amazon. Slow tributaries, creeks, and swamps provide shelter among roots and submerged plants. Fish leave these retreats in groups to feed at night.
Aquarium setup
Start with a footprint of about 60 × 30 cm. Soft sand, dense planting, subdued light, and numerous hiding places suit its sheltered habits. An exposed layout offers little security.
Diet & feeding
Catfish pellets, algae wafers, and other granular foods are accepted, with live and frozen items offered regularly. Feeding shortly before lights go out makes food available during its main activity period.
Behaviour & compatibility
Generally placid, it may still consume especially small fishes. Medium-sized tetras, peaceful cichlids, and suitable bottom-dwelling catfishes are possible companions. It is tolerant of conspecifics and prefers company, so maintain at least three together.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females tend to develop a rounder body. A spotted male underside, reportedly absent in females, is a less certain supporting character.
Breeding
A reliable account of natural aquarium breeding remains unavailable. Reports of a surface bubble nest among vegetation and male guarding in the wild are tentative rather than a confirmed breeding protocol.
Notes
Trade labels may retain the old name Amblydoras hancockii, which relates to the separate catfish Platydoras hancockii. Such labels should not settle identification.
Pectoral-spine friction and swim-bladder vibration can produce audible sounds. Body and fin spines readily become trapped in netting, and sharp pectoral spines can cause puncture wounds during transfers.
