Overview
An identity problem underlies this account. The entry is named Alestopetersius nigropterus, but its husbandry material concerns an unidentified African rainbow tetra sold under that name. The following observations apply to those trade fishes and are not verified biology of the true Lake Mai-Ndombe species.
Distribution & habitat
The traded form reportedly leaves the Democratic Republic of the Congo through Kinshasa and probably originates in nearby Congo-system waters. Its actual collection range is unclear. The formally named species is associated with Lake Mai-Ndombe; the two distributions should not be merged.
Aquarium setup
For the traded fish, provide at least about 120 × 30 cm of base area. Planting or a river-style arrangement of sand, gravel, rounded stones, and wood is suitable, leaving broad swimming lanes.
Use mature biological filtration and avoid changing organic-waste levels. Weekly changes of approximately 20–30% are recommended; newly established aquariums are unsuitable.
Diet & feeding
Wild feeding on insects, crustaceans, and fallen fruits is suggested rather than established. Aquarium feeding can combine quality flakes and granules with bloodworms, water fleas, and brine shrimp. Include some plant or algal material in prepared foods.
Behaviour & compatibility
The described trade fish is lively, somewhat nervous, and generally peaceful. Maintain at least eight to ten of both sexes, with appropriate schooling companions to improve confidence. Males intensify displays while competing over females or rank.
Sexual dimorphism
Described males are brighter, with extended dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins and stronger red pigmentation during reproduction. Conflicting descriptions of central tail rays prevent that feature from serving as a dependable isolated character.
Notes
Retain collection information, photographs, and shipment identity wherever available. A shared scientific label does not resolve the mismatch between the observed trade fish and the formally named species.
