Overview

Akysis varius is a small sand-burying catfish distinguished in part by highly variable serrations on its pectoral spine. Clean, oxygen-rich flowing water and protection from aggressive feeding competition are fundamental to aquarium care.

Distribution & habitat

Known sites all belong to the Mekong drainage. They include the Xe Bangfai system in central-western Laos, Thailand's Mun basin, and the Siem Reap River in northwestern Cambodia.

The genus generally uses flowing streams over sand, gravel, and rocks. Water ranges from clear to slightly turbid, with greater flow and suspended material during wet periods. Submerged branches, roots, and patches of litter provide cover.

Aquarium setup

Allow a footprint around 45 × 30 cm. Fine soft sand lets it bury completely or leave only the eyes exposed. Rounded stones and roots form additional crevices. Attached plants avoid disturbance from digging, and a little leaf litter may be used.

It does not tolerate accumulated organic pollution well. Maintain substantial dissolved oxygen and good circulation, changing roughly 30–50% of the water weekly. Small fish size is not a reason to relax water-quality maintenance.

Diet & feeding

Small aquatic crustaceans, worms, and insect larvae form the general diet of the genus. Dry foods may be rejected, so provide regular suitable live or frozen offerings, including brine shrimp, water fleas, and bloodworms. Cut larger items for tiny individuals.

After-dark feeding follows the pattern of relatives, though settled fish may emerge when food is offered. Check that it eats rather than merely watching faster companions clear the meal.

Behaviour & compatibility

Avoid large, aggressive, or highly competitive tankmates. Similar-sized peaceful fishes and carefully selected small bottom dwellers are more appropriate. Loaches need particular scrutiny for adult size and territoriality. Peaceful coexistence with freshwater shrimp has been observed.

It is nonaggressive toward conspecifics and can be maintained alone or in a group, with enough usable shelters.

Breeding

Reproduction of this species is unreported. Cooling-associated spawning in a relative is only comparative information; its temperature change, incubation period, and juvenile development schedule should not be transferred into a protocol for this fish.

Notes

The rear edge of the pectoral spine can carry zero to five serrations. Larger specimens examined during description had fewer, sometimes none, unlike the trend in some relatives. Whether this difference relates to sex is unresolved, so serration count is not a reliable sexing method.

A relatively truncate tail and straight-looking head margins in dorsal view offer further clues. Akysid fin spines can produce painful punctures and should not be gripped during handling or maintenance.
