English
Overview
Acanthopsoides sp. 'A01' is an unidentified small horse-faced loach. It can bury completely in sand and benefits from conspecific company. Avoid turning over the entire bottom simply because a fish is temporarily hidden. Keep its provisional label separate from similar numbered forms, particularly in breeding records.
Distribution & habitat
Its origin is unconfirmed, with Thailand or Peninsular Malaysia suggested. Members of the genus commonly occupy clear flowing channels over sand, fine gravel, or mud, but this does not establish an exact locality for A01.
Aquarium setup
Allow at least about 60 × 30 cm and provide soft fine sand. Coarse gravel can obstruct burrowing and feeding or cause injury. Secure stones, wood, and roots before adding sand so excavation cannot topple them. Dim light and modest leaves add shade.
Provide oxygenation without powerful currents. Guard filter intakes against small fish and fit a secure cover, especially during initial settling when jumping may occur.
Diet & feeding
The genus sifts insect larvae and small crustaceans from substrate through the gills. Offer suitable sinking dry foods alongside varied live or frozen brine shrimp, Daphnia, bloodworms, and aquatic worms. Do not rely on incidental leftovers in the bottom.
Behaviour & compatibility
At least six suit its gregarious tendencies. Peaceful small schooling fish above the bottom can provide reassurance. Assess other sand-dwelling loaches individually and exclude strongly territorial or aggressive choices.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature males have enlarged pectorals, a thickened and extended second ray, and small breeding tubercles on its branched section. Females are usually slightly larger and fuller-bodied.
Breeding
A keeper recovered a few fry from a small aquarium containing only an adult pair over mixed sand and fine gravel. This supports aquarium reproduction of A01, but does not establish spawning mechanics, incubation times, or a reliable trigger.
Notes
Rows of dorsal and lateral markings assist comparison but cannot assign A01 to a named species with confidence. Movable eye spines typical of cobitids can snag nets, so handle gently.
